Battery warranty, per trim (2026)
Every Tesla battery is covered for 8 years with a minimum 70% capacity floor — the miles differ by trim (tesla.com, verified Sept 2026):
| Model 3 RWD · Model Y RWD & AWD | 8 years / 100,000 miles |
| Model 3 & Y Premium and Performance trims (incl. Model Y L) | 8 years / 120,000 miles |
| Model S · Model X · Cybertruck | 8 years / 150,000 miles |
A battery you pay Tesla to replace carries its own 4-year / 50,000-mile parts warranty.
Tesla battery replacement cost, out of warranty
Invoice-backed where invoices exist; labeled projections where they don't. Tesla Service labor runs $175–$230/hr in 2026.
| Model | Total (pack + labor) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Model 3 | $11,500 – $19,000 | Documented invoice: $15,799 total (pack + labor). LFP packs at the low end, Long Range NCA at the top. |
| Model Y | $11,000 – $17,000 | Estimate — no confirmed invoices published yet; LFP ~$11–13k, structural 4680 packs can top $18k. |
| Model S | $20,000 – $26,000 | Estimates from owner reports cluster at $20–22k; 100 kWh cars at the top of the range. |
| Model X | $21,000 – $26,500 | Estimate — no published invoices; treat as projection. |
| Cybertruck | $25,000 – $32,500 | Projection only: no truck is old enough to have left its 8-yr/150k warranty. |
The number that matters more: in a 30,000-vehicle study, only 0.3% of 2022-or-newer EVs have ever needed a pack replaced (2% for 2017–2021; 8.5% for 2011–2016) — and Tesla's own fleet report shows ~85% capacity remaining at 200,000 miles on Model 3/Y. For most owners this is a bill that never arrives.
Tesla battery FAQ
How long do Tesla batteries last?
Far longer than most owners keep the car. Across the 47,131 used Teslas we track right now, average range retention is 90.2% of original EPA range, and 54.8% of cars still hold 90% or more. Tesla's own fleet report shows roughly 85% capacity remaining at 200,000 miles for Model 3/Y and about 88% for Model S/X — and every pack is warrantied for 8 years with a 70% capacity floor.
How much does a Tesla battery replacement cost?
Out of warranty, $11,000–$22,000 covers nearly all real 2026 cases: a documented Model 3 invoice came to $15,799 including labor, Model Y estimates run $11,000–$17,000, and Model S/X reach $20,000–$26,000. Third-party module repairs ($3,000–$5,000) and remanufactured packs ($8,000–$10,000 installed for Model 3/Y) cut that 30–50%. A Tesla-installed replacement pack carries its own 4-year/50,000-mile warranty.
How likely is a battery to fail after the warranty?
Rare and getting rarer: in Recurrent's 30,000-vehicle study, 8.5% of 2011–2016 EVs ever had a pack replaced, 2% of 2017–2021 cars, and just 0.3% of 2022-and-newer — most of those under warranty. For a modern Tesla, an out-of-pocket pack replacement is a low-single-digit-percent lifetime event.
Does Supercharging damage the battery?
Frequent DC fast charging accelerates degradation only modestly — Tesla's fleet data shows heavy Supercharger users tracking close to home-charging cars, and the battery management system throttles charging to protect the pack. Routine road-trip Supercharging is a non-issue.
How do I check my Tesla's battery health?
Two free ways: compare your current 100% range to the original EPA rating (the method behind the fleet data on this page), or run the battery health test in the Service menu (parked, plugged in, takes several hours). Buying used? Every listing we track shows current range vs original EPA.
Is it the big battery that fails — or the small one?
Usually the small one. The 12V/16V low-voltage battery is a normal wear item costing roughly $85–$300 to replace, and it causes most 'battery' warnings owners see. High-voltage pack failures are the rare event covered by the 8-year warranty.
How much does a Tesla battery degrade per year?
Roughly 1–1.5% of range per year after an initial first-year dip. Our live fleet data shows cars around 100k miles still averaging 81.9% retention. Degradation is front-loaded and then flattens — high-mileage cars lose range slower than new ones.
