Closing the sale, the easy way
You have agreed a price. This is how the two of you finish the sale without the worrying parts: paying a stranger, and making sure the title is good.
We suggest KeySavvy
KeySavvy is an independent company, a licensed auto dealer that handles the payment and the title for a sale between two private people. It says it works in all 50 states. The buyer's money is held until the car is picked up, the title is checked before anyone pays, and the paperwork is done online. It is convenient too: no cash to carry, no cashier's check, no trip to the bank.
TeslaTracker is not affiliated with KeySavvy and earns nothing when you use it. You are free to close the sale any other way.
Why it is easier for both of you
- The buyer does not pay a stranger. The money goes to KeySavvy and stays there until the car is picked up.
- The seller knows the money is real. KeySavvy verifies the payment and tells the seller when it is OK to hand over the keys.
- The title is checked first. KeySavvy confirms the seller owns the car and looks for loans and liens before the buyer pays.
- A loan on the car is usually fine. KeySavvy pays the seller's lender out of the buyer's payment and sends the seller the rest.
- It works from anywhere. You do not have to be in the same state, and the car can be collected by a shipper.
KeySavvy states a guarantee of its own: the buyer gets a clear title, and the seller gets paid.
The steps
- 1The seller adds the car. On keysavvy.com/get-paid, the seller enters the VIN and the price you agreed, and gets a link to send to the buyer. Buyers: ask the seller to do this. You can create your account in the meantime.
- 2You both confirm who you are. Each of you verifies your identity online. KeySavvy then checks that the seller owns the car and whether there is a loan on it, and gives you both a title report. KeySavvy says this usually takes 15 to 30 minutes during business hours.
- 3The buyer pays KeySavvy. Not the seller. The buyer can pay by bank transfer, wire, Zelle or card, or with a loan from a bank or credit union. KeySavvy holds the money, and says most payments are confirmed right away. A price over $50,000 has to be paid by wire, and wires only go out on weekdays.
- 4You both sign the bill of sale. KeySavvy sends it once the buyer has paid. You each sign it online, and can download it later.
- 5You meet and hand over the car. KeySavvy emails the seller when it is OK to hand over the keys. Sellers: wait for that email, and if you are not sure it is real, sign in at keysavvy.com and check the sale there. Buyers: look the car over before you take it. Until you or your shipper collect it, KeySavvy lets you cancel and refunds your payment, its fee included. Once it is collected, the sale is final.
- 6The seller is paid and the title goes to the buyer. The seller signs the title the way KeySavvy's instructions say and mails it to KeySavvy. KeySavvy pays the seller, by direct deposit or check, once it has the title and the car has been picked up, so mailing the title early gets you paid sooner. KeySavvy then sends the title to the buyer by tracked mail, and says it can usually give the buyer a temporary permit to drive on until it arrives.
KeySavvy says most sales are done within a day. Its own walk-through is at keysavvy.com/how-it-works.
If there is a loan on the car
- The seller does not pay it off first. KeySavvy gets the payoff amount from the lender, pays the lender when the car is handed over, and sends the seller what is left.
- The title takes longer. The lender sends it to KeySavvy, which KeySavvy says usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. KeySavvy then sends it on to the buyer.
- Sellers, keep paying the loan until your lender shows it as paid off. KeySavvy says the payoff can take 7 to 10 business days to show, and the lender refunds anything you overpay.
- Owe more than the sale price? You can still sell. You pay the difference before the car is picked up.
- Buying with a loan too? Ask your lender early. KeySavvy says some lenders will not finance a car that still has a loan on it.
What KeySavvy charges
These are KeySavvy's fees as its site listed them in October 2026. TeslaTracker takes no part of them.
- $99 for the buyer and $99 for the seller. You can split it that way, or one of you can pay both.
- $99 more for the seller when there is a loan or a lease to pay off.
- 3.19% on anything paid by card. Cards are limited to $10,000. Bank transfer, wire and Zelle carry no KeySavvy fee.
- Nothing if the sale does not go through. The fee is charged only when the sale completes.
Fees can change. Today's are on keysavvy.com.
What it does not cover
- The car's condition. KeySavvy does not inspect the car, and the sale is as-is. See the car before you take it, or pay for an independent inspection.
- Tax and registration. The buyer still pays these in their own state, usually at the DMV. In Arizona, Nevada, Mississippi and Illinois the tax can be higher than in a direct private sale. KeySavvy tells the buyer before they pay.
- A price far below market value. KeySavvy says it may not approve such a sale.
- Cars and buyers outside the US. The car needs a US title and the buyer a US address.
Three habits that keep you safe
- Go to keysavvy.com yourself. A real KeySavvy link starts with www.keysavvy.com. If one arrives in a message and you are not sure, type the address instead.
- Wire details come from your KeySavvy account only. KeySavvy says it never sends them by email.
- Never share a verification code, and never send the other person a deposit to hold the car.
Would you rather deal directly?
That is fine too. Buyers: see the car and the title in person, check that the name on the title matches the seller's ID, and never send a deposit. If there is a loan, ask for the lender's payoff letter and agree in writing how the loan is paid off and when you get the title. Sellers: hand over the car and the title only after you have been paid in full.
